BLACK HISTORY MONTH SCHOLARSHIP


The Trinity and St. Matthew’s United Methodist Churches are pleased to award book scholarships valued at $700.00 to high school seniors and current college and graduate students from the Greater Newark area and beyond who attend or are planning to attend one of America’s HBCUs. A scholarship will be awarded to the student with the best written essay until funds are given completely out.

Essay Topic: The Importance of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU’s) in the 21st Century

Applicants must write an original essay based on the above topic, complete the application form below, and meet other eligibility requirements as outlined. Please electronically type requested information below to submit for consideration!

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS ● A High School Senior planning to attend a HBCU, A college student or graduate student at a HBCU in the 2020-2021 school year ● Resident of the Greater Newark area (Newark, Irvington, Union, Vaux Hall, East Orange, Elizabeth, South Orange, Maplewood, Montclair, Plainfield, Bloomfield, Nutley, Summit, Jersey City, Paterson, West Orange, Linden, Roselle, Rahway) or beyond ● Submit an essay on selected topic: The Importance of HBCU's in the 21st Century (500-word max) Please submit completed Application & Essay to: HBCU@saintmatthewsnewark.org SUBMISSION DEADLINE: February 18, 2022 @ 11:59pm EST WINNERS NOTIFIED VIA EMAIL: February 22, 2022 Required for consideration: 1. Completed application that can be found at www.saintmatthewsnewark.org 2. Essay on The Importance of HBCU’s in the 21st Century. All essays must be typed, 500 words max. Please include name, email address and signature. 3. Proof of enrollment in a high school or HBCU 4. Attendance at HBCU Sunday Worship Service via ZOOM or telephone on February 27, 2022 at 9AM.
